I graduated from University after achieving a 2.1 degree in Biomedical Science. During my final year I decided that the biomedical field was not the right path for me, however I had no idea what I actually wanted to do.
I decided to attend a university careers fair in March to gain some inspiration on potential career paths. There I saw the stand for the Leeds City Council graduate scheme I spoke to the helpful staff who advised me on the application process.
I realised what an excellent opportunity working in such a varied role within the public sector would be as I would be able to utilise skills I had learnt during university as well as developing them.
Starting your career on the council’s graduate scheme is an excellent opportunity there are very few organisations with such a diverse area of work.
I decided to apply for 2 types of roles which were available, a trainee professional accountant and the general project officer role. Once I had completed the application form I was invited to take part a graduate assessment day. I was later contacted and told I had been had been successful at the assessment centre and was invited to an interview for both roles. After a number of varied interviews I was successful and placed within the PFI contracting team within children’s services.
My role mainly consists of supporting the PFI team and processing the invoices and recharges across the contracts while liaising school business managers and management companies who carry out the works within schools. I have thoroughly enjoyed this role as it has been both challenging and satisfying, I also have the opportunity to attend meetings with contract officers to see the schools and meet the staff in person. The huge benefit to the graduate programme is I am also able to be a part of other projects within children’s services and the wider council outside of my regular role.
I am currently working on a project to increase the trading of services between the council and schools and have been involved with the organisation and planning of a trade fair and have been given the responsibility to edit and update the website, I was given one to one training on how to edit and create pages and web parts increasing my knowledge base.
