Hints and Tips

For a successful application

Be yourself.

What is it about you that will make your application stand out? Make sure to include relevant skills, knowledge and experience to make your application shine.

Do your research.

Ensure that you are familiar with Leeds City Council, its services and its strategic ambitions. Having a sound knowledge of the role played by the Council will help make your application stand out and allows you to discover what it is that really interests you about the Leeds City Council Graduate Scheme.

The Assessment Centre stage will include a series of tasks designed to test your knowledge of the council, as well as providing you with a chance to ask lots of questions to people who are already a part of the organisation.

As part of your application, you will be asked to do a video pitch. This is a great opportunity to showcase yourself and allow us to get to know you better. The video pitch will require you to answer one question. There is no set format and you can be as creative as you like.

You will be sent the question via email, and you will get two weeks to submit your video. The video should be two minutes long, so think carefully about the way that you answer the question and the way that you present yourself. This is your chance to demonstrate why you are passionate about coming to work for Leeds City Council.

Include examples from your work experience, outside interests and/or volunteering.

We are interested to know what you are involved in and motivated by above and beyond your academic studies. Try to use a range of examples from your list of work experience and extra-curricular activities to demonstrate how you share our values.

Make it easy to get yourself shortlisted.

Structure your application in a logical way. Prepare longer responses in a separate document will make it much easier to structure responses and to check your spelling and grammar.

Check the application process.

Keep informed of current recruitment dates and application process by following us on Twitter or Facebook.

You will need to apply online after the scheme goes live for applications. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to put together and submit your application before the deadline.

A dedicated Graduate Programme Team will be assessing each application. At the assessment centre, there will be multiple people from across the organisation that will be assessing you on the day. This will give you the chance to ask plenty of questions.
